There's no reason to purchase two textbooks (especially since my college theory book cost nearly $). And since you already have a fairly extensive background, I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you know the fundamentals because your school might give you a placement test to see if you need to go to Music Theory I or a fundamentals course. Excellent Jazz theory book that is closer to tonal music theory than the Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine. However, Levine's book is less dry, more accessible and conversational. If you don't have a background in tonal (i.e. Classical) music theory, then Bert's introduction of classical inversion numbers (i.e. 6th) will confuse because there's no explanation/5(25).

The Theory and Technique of Electronic Music is a uniquely complete source of information for the computer synthesis of rich and interesting musical timbres. The theory is clearly presented in a completely general form. But in addition, examples of how to synthesize each theoretical aspect are presented in the Pd. The summary of the series this is the partial text only edition, a manual for many new methods of composition and new music theory including: studies into modal diatonicism, modes, diatonic variants, harmonic minor, harmonic major, Hungarian gypsy, Hungarian minor.

Each book contains a complete course for the ABRSM music theory grade, set out for self-study with exercises and answers provided. Suitable for age 10 to adult, for use with or without help from your music .   Of the many books I have on the subject The Jazz Theory Book (and The Jazz Piano Book) are the ones that have given me the most useful and applicable information. It is my desert island jazz - and even just plain music -theory book. It may not be for someone with zero background in music/jazz theory/5.
